Beef Business and Breeding field day for Kingaroy (Posted 12/07/06)

New concepts in cattle nutrition offer new opportunities.

Beef producers are not capturing the genetic gains that have already been made in cattle genetics for feed efficiency, according to founder of the innovative ELMS (Elders Livestock Management Solutions) program, David Ginter.

Mr Ginter, a speaker at the Beef Business and Breeding Field Day on Friday 28th July, said outdated management and feeding practices contribute to reduced weight gains and feed conversion efficiency, and this can impact production for the remainder of the animal’s life - whether it is destined for breeding or finishing.

"The ELMS program is a new concept that is designed to give beef producers the technical knowledge and products to maximise the performance and productivity from their cattle," Mr Ginter said.

Beef producers have invested heavily in genetics for years, however new research is showing that there is still a lot of production to be realised in existing herds by improving feed conversion efficiency, lifting conception and calving rates, and new approaches to drought and production feeding.

Climate change and high land values are forcing beef producers to reconsider their herds’ genetics and production systems to maximise returns. Finding new strategies to thrive in this new environment is the focus of the field day "Climate Change & Cost of Capital- Dealing with the New Realities" being held at Rick at Alice Greenup’s property on 28th July, near Kingaroy.

This is a rare opportunity for Queenslanders to hear first hand from the founder of ELMS David Ginter, who is based in South Australia and is making an exceptional effort to share his extensive knowledge and experience in ruminant nutrition and animal management with Queensland beef producers.

Other speakers include Peter Parnell, Research Leader, Beef Genetics & Improvement; Director, Beef Industry Centre of Excellence, CRC & NSW Ag who will explain the role genetics play in your business’ bottom line and which animals will be profitable under new climate conditions and high land values.

Margaret Bridgeford, CEO Resource Consulting Services (RCS) will outline the new realities about land values and climate change, and compare the profitability of beef businesses from around Australia and Internationally.

The day’s program includes a practical session with Russell Grey, Santa Gertrudis Breed Classifier to help producers maximise production by identifying animals with good constitution, doing ability and correct structure.

Producers can register now by phoning Rick & Alice Greenup on 07 4164 4260. Seating is limited. The program will run from 9.00am to 3pm. Refreshments provided. Registrations close Wednesday 26th July.

NLIS Database Cattle Transfer Workshops  (posted 27/02/06)

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is holding a series of workshops across  Victoria  to  highlight  the  benefits  and responsibilities of the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS).

DPI  Meat  and  Wool  Sub-Project  Manager,  Kellyanne  Semple,  said  NLIS electronically  identifies cattle with ear tags or boluses which allows the performance  of  individual animals to be monitored on-farm from conception to departure.

"Since 1 July 2005 it has been a requirement to notify the NLIS database of property  to  property movements (for example farm to farm/farm to feedlot) with  the  legal  responsibility  of  the  notification  resting  with  the receiving part.

"As  a result we have developed a free hands-on workshop for beef producers and  dairy  farmers  to  learn more about NLIS and the database," Ms Semple said.

The workshop caters for all computer skill levels and provides farmers with information regarding the Government's recent funding announcement designed to assist NLIS development in the cattle industry.

"Beef  producers  and  dairy  farmers with 50 or more adult cattle on their property  from  July  1 2005 can apply for a grant equivalent of 50% of the purchase  price of NLIS scanning and associated software up to a maximum of $500.

"This  is  an  excellent  opportunity  for  farmers to invest into the many benefits that NLIS can provide for on-farm management," Ms Semple said.

Please  ensure you register for the workshops, as numbers are limited to 15 participants per workshop.

For  more  information  about  NLIS  and  the  grant  visit  DPI's  website www.dpi.vic.gov.au/nlis

Australia's first offering of Six Star Rated Murray Grey Bulls at the River Murray Bull Sale.

Breeders who understand the genetics required to improve yield and profit and to improve the Australian beef industry are invited to Helen Sutherland Homestead to purchase first class bulls to meet strategic breeding plans.

Breeders will buy with the confidence that all bulls have been Genestar Rated and Breedplan Recorded.

Four bulls with SIX Genestar Markers will be offered for sale. All Murray Grey bulls offered have a minimum three Genestar markers for tenderness.

Each of these bulls has been carefully selected for their sound structure and reproductive traits. All are from proven maternal background, produce quality beef consistently and have calm temperaments.

Together with a strict physical assessment, buyers will be able to observe the successful Michaelong type.

The River Murray Bull Sale offers all breeders a unique opportunity to secure the highest quality bulls.

To see a list of bulls for sale and their EBV’s go to sale catalogues on the Murray Grey website. Genestar results are also recorded against each bull.

Sixpence Park at the Ekka!  (posted 24/01/06)

This stud is owned by the Martin children who would like to thank the New England Breed Promotion group for holding heifer shows for young Murray Grey enthusiasts at Inverell each year. Also to Peter and Kathy Barrett from the Wheelview Stud at Tenterfield who have had a long association with the Martin's. Peter and Kath do so much to promote and help all Murray Grey people.

At the Ekka in 2005 Sixpence Park Mary was third in her class and Sixpence Park Zoro was 1st in his class (unfortunately the only entrant) but our BULLFROG as he was known whet out and was awarded Reserve Champion.

Both Amie and Stephen made the finals of the Steer judging at the Ekka and Amie made it to the finals of the steer paraders compeition.

On the day of the beef cattle junior judging and beef cattle paraders competition Amie come down with the dreaded Ekka flue. Stephen flew the flag for Sixpence Park and was placed 2nd in the Junior Judging out of 30 competitors and won the Junior Paraders with some stiff competition.

Stephen and Amie would like to thank the Murray Grey people at the Ekka for their support and friendship.
